#PlenaryHighlights: Thursday, January 29, 2026
The House of Representatives at plenary took firm and decisive action to safeguard public welfare, strengthen food security, and promote accountability in the management of agricultural interventions by adopting three Matters of Urgent Public Importance, reaffirming its commitment to equity, national stability, and sustainable development.
The House initiated urgent interventions in the following areas:
Healthcare equity and institutional integrity:
Addressing allegations of discriminatory recruitment practices at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH), the House expressed concern over reports that seventeen medical doctors posted for housemanship were rejected on ethnic grounds. The House mandated the Committee on Health Institutions to investigate the matter and report within four weeks, while calling on the Federal Ministry of Health to suspend the Chief Medical Director to prevent interference with the investigation.
Food security and agricultural recovery:
In response to worsening poverty, hunger, and agricultural decline across Northern Nigeria, the House urged the Federal Government to treat agricultural recovery and food security as urgent national priorities. The House further called on the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, in collaboration with relevant MDAs, to immediately deploy farm inputs, fertiliser, seedlings, credit facilities, mechanisation, and extension services within the current planting window.
Agricultural financing and accountability:
The House also resolved to probe the non-release of approved African Development Bank (AfDB) and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) agricultural intervention funds, expressing concern that prolonged delays have disrupted multiple farming seasons, denied critical support to farmers, and placed additional international financing at risk. The House mandated an investigation into the matter and directed that a report be submitted within two weeks.
These resolutions are aimed at protecting public interest, strengthening institutional accountability, and ensuring timely interventions to avert deepening food insecurity.
