Today’s plenary features a robust agenda spanning legislative consideration, oversight, and institutional reforms.
Highlights of Today’s Legislative Business:
1. Presentation of Reports:
The House will receive six reports, including those from the Committees on Public Petitions and Information, National Orientation, Ethics, and Values. Among them are petitions concerning land disputes in Benue State, energy supply challenges in Lagos, and wrongful dismissal at the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA).
2. Bills for Consideration:
Fifteen bills are slated for debate and passage. Notable among them are:
– Bills seeking to establish the National Board for Arabic and Islamic Studies and several Federal Colleges and Research Institutes across Nigeria.
– Constitutional alteration bills aimed at strengthening local government autonomy and creating new local government areas in Kaduna State.
– The Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Amendment Bill and the Nigerian Recycling Regulatory Agency (Establishment) Bill, both of which address institutional efficiency and regulatory advancement.
3. Motions:
Key motions include:
– A call for the upgrading of first-generation universities and a probe into the quality of TETFund projects across Nigerian institutions.
– A motion urging investigation into the collapse of local rice farming and milling, and the impact of import policy reversals on local producers.
– Legislative consideration to *restore Aujara State Constituency* in Jigawa State for fairer representation.
– A motion advocating the provision of cassava processing machines and short-term loans to empower farmers nationwide.
4. Consideration of Reports:
The House will deliberate on several committee reports, including the approval of new external borrowing, refinancing of Eurobonds, and the issuance of a debut sovereign Sukuk to finance national development projects. Reports on proposed amendments to the *Raw Materials Research and Development Council Act* and several health institution establishment bills will also be taken.
5. Committee Meetings:
Scheduled committee meetings include Rules and Business, Public Petitions, and the Ad-hoc Committee on the 2024/2025 Recruitment Exercise into the National Assembly Service Commission.
