The House of Representatives on Wednesday reaffirmed its commitment to national stability by considering three crucial Matters of Urgent Public Importance centred on economic relief, human rights protection, and conflict de-escalation linked to state creation.

A major concern before the Parliament was the severe economic hardship facing vulnerable Nigerians due to aggressive recovery measures on COVID-19 intervention loans. Given the current economic realities, the House called on the Federal Government, the Central Bank of Nigeria, and NIRSAL Microfinance Bank to suspend all loan deductions and to implement a total waiver on outstanding loans owed by affected households and micro-businesses.

The House also addressed a grave human rights issue involving the reported extrajudicial killing of eight unarmed women protesters, including a minor, by military personnel in Lamurde LGA, Adamawa State. The Committees on Human Rights, Defence, and Internal Security were directed to carry out a rapid fact-finding mission and brief the House accordingly.

The session further considered a sensitive constitutional matter with potential to trigger ethnic and boundary conflict: the proposal for the creation of Toru-Be State. The proposal includes areas of Edo State such as Ovia and Ikpoba-Okha LGAs, which are historically and culturally significant to the Benin Kingdom. To prevent tension and ensure clarity, the House mandated the relevant committees to investigate the proposal, uphold existing state boundaries, and promote transparency, fairness, and broad consultation in any future state-creation processes.
