Abuja, FCT | Monday, November 10, 2025 – The House of Representatives has reiterated its commitment to redefining how government operates and how citizens access services through the proposed National Digital Economy and E-Governance Bill.
Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, PhD, GCON, stated this at a One-Day Joint Senate and House of Representatives Public Hearing on the Bill, organised by the House Committee on Digital and Information Technology, in collaboration with the Senate Committee on ICT and Cybersecurity, on Monday.
Speaker Abbas represented by Rep. Isiaq Abiodun Akinlade, emphasised that digital transformation has become a national necessity central to Nigeria’s economic competitiveness, accountability, and national security. The Speaker noted that the legislation will redefine how government works and how citizens access services, creating a smarter, more transparent Nigeria built on technology and accountability.
“It is a vision for a new way of governance; one that is efficient, transparent, and centered on citizens,” Speaker Abbas stated. He further explained that the Bill provides a solid legal framework for digital governance, data protection, cybersecurity, and inclusive access to technology, ensuring that no Nigerian, whether urban or rural, is left behind in the nation’s digital future.
In his welcome address, Chairman of the Senate Committee on ICT and Cybersecurity, Senator Shuaib Afolabi Salisu, stated that the legislation, when passed into law, would be the first of its kind in Africa in the areas of digital economy and e-governance.
In his remarks, Co-Chair of the Hearing and Chairman of the House Committee on Digital and Information Technology, Rep. Adedeji Stanley Olajide, described the public hearing as a demonstration of Nigeria’s collective resolve to build a digitally inclusive, transparent, and efficient governance system.
He commended the robust contributions and expert insights shared by stakeholders, noting that they had enriched the legislative process and strengthened the vision for Nigeria’s digital transformation. Rep. Olajide, alongside Senator Salisu, also expressed appreciation to the Leadership of the Senate and House of Representatives for their commitment to advancing reforms that will empower Nigeria’s digital future.
Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, assured that the President would assent to the Bill once passed by the National Assembly, underscoring the executive’s alignment with the digital transformation agenda.
Rep. Olajide also commended the Minister and the heads of key agencies including the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Galaxy Backbone, and civil society representatives for their technical contributions, which he said will help align the Bill with both global standards and local realities.
