As part of its legislative business on Thursday, the House of Representatives advanced six Bills to the Committee Stage following debate on their general principles.
Collectively, the Bills seek to strengthen regional development, modernise financial governance, enhance national institutional resilience, expand nursing education, and improve access to tertiary healthcare services.
The Bills include:
Regional Development: A Bill to amend the North-West Development Commission (Establishment) Act, 2024 to strengthen the Commission’s operations.
Financial Governance: A Bill to repeal and re-enact the Trustee Investment Act to modernise the investment of trust funds in authorised securities and other permissible assets.
National Resilience: A Bill to establish a comprehensive framework for strengthening national systems resilience, anti-money laundering, counter-terrorism financing, governance of emerging financial technologies, inter-agency coordination, and institutional integrity.
Healthcare Education: Two Bills to establish the Federal College of Nursing and Midwifery, Nkpa Bende, Abia State, and the Federal College of Nursing Sciences, Kumo, Gombe State, to expand nursing education, training, and research.
Healthcare Infrastructure: A Bill to amend the Federal Medical Centres Act, 2022 to establish the Federal Medical Centre, Bende, Abia State, expanding access to tertiary healthcare services.
Following debate, the Bills were referred to the relevant House Committees for detailed legislative scrutiny, stakeholder engagement, and report back to the House for further consideration.
