The House of Representatives, during plenary on Tuesday, adopted three Matters of Urgent Public Importance and three motions addressing public health, environmental protection, healthcare, accountability, foreign affairs, and disaster response.

The Matters of Urgent Public Importance include:

1. Food Safety: House seeks stronger nationwide food safety regulation through enhanced surveillance and enforcement, improved sanitation infrastructure, and sustained public awareness to curb the rising incidence of food-borne diseases.

2. Environmental Protection: House urges the Federal Government to deploy Ecological Funds to address shoreline erosion threatening the Eraskon Lubricants/Chemicals Blending Plant Project in Gbarain, Bayelsa State.

3. Healthcare: House calls for the enrolment of Members of the National Assembly, their spouses, children, dependants, and legislative aides under a health insurance scheme in line with the National Health Insurance Authority Act, 2022.

MOTIONS

1. Foreign Affairs: House mandates an investigation into the losses, casualties, damages, and abandoned properties arising from recurring xenophobic attacks against Nigerians in South Africa, with a view to strengthening diplomatic engagement, enhancing the protection of Nigerians abroad, and ensuring accountability.

2. Public Accountability: House calls for a comprehensive audit of seized, forfeited, and recovered assets nationwide and the establishment of an Ad-hoc Committee to strengthen transparency, accountability, and oversight in asset recovery and management.

3. Disaster Response: House urges urgent Federal Government intervention to provide relief, rehabilitation, and livelihood restoration for victims of the devastating windstorm and flooding in Gashua, Bade/Jakusko Federal Constituency of Yobe State.

Following their adoption, the motions were referred to the relevant House Committees to engage the responsible government agencies, conduct oversight, monitor implementation of the House’s resolutions, and report back to the House where necessary.
