Abuja, FCT | Tuesday, July 14, 2026 – The House of Representatives has rescinded its earlier resolution suspending the commencement of the National Assembly Open Week 2026, thereby reaffirming its unwavering commitment to transparency, accountability, institutional openness, and sustained engagement with citizens in the legislative process.
The decision followed the adoption of a motion sponsored by the Chairman of the House Committee on Rules and Business, Rep. Francis Waive (APC, Delta), titled: “Need to Rescind Resolution No. (V) on the Motion on the Need to Address the Poor Funding of Appropriated Budgets and Delayed Releases to MDAs as Revealed During the 2026 Budget Defence Session: Pursuant to Order Nine, Rule 6 of the Standing Orders of the House of Representatives.”
The House had, on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, adopted a resolution suspending the programme during deliberations on concerns relating to funding challenges affecting Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), as highlighted during the 2026 budget defence process.
However, preparations for the National Assembly Open Week 2026 had already advanced significantly, with invitations extended to stakeholders, development partners, civil society organisations, professional associations, and other participants from across the country.
In recognition of the importance of the initiative as a critical platform for strengthening legislative openness, deepening public participation, and promoting accountability, the House resolved to rescind the earlier suspension and uphold the commencement of the programme as scheduled.
Accordingly, the National Assembly Open Week 2026, themed “Three Years of the 10th Assembly: Advancing Transparency, Inclusion and Reform,” will hold from Tuesday, July 14 to Thursday, July 16, 2026.
The three-day programme provides an opportunity for citizens, stakeholders, and development partners to engage directly with the National Assembly, review the milestones and reforms of the 10th Assembly over the past three years, and participate in conversations aimed at advancing transparency, accountability, inclusion, and democratic governance.
The House of Representatives reiterates that an open and accessible Parliament remains central to its legislative agenda. The House will continue to strengthen mechanisms for citizen engagement, promote accountability in governance, and ensure that the legislative process remains responsive to the needs, concerns, and aspirations of Nigerians.
