The House of Representatives, at its plenary on Thursday, June 11, 2026, took significant decisions on parliamentary leadership and constitutional reform, reinforcing its commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and addressing critical national challenges.
At the commencement of proceedings, the House received formal notification of the reconstitution of the Minority Leadership following a consensus among opposition parties represented in the Green Chamber. Consequently, Rep. Frederick Agbedi (PDP, Bayelsa) emerged as Minority Leader, Rep. Abdussamad Dasuki (ADC, Sokoto) as Deputy Minority Leader, and Rep. Mansur Manu Soro (APM, Bauchi) as Minority Whip, while Rep. George Ozodinobi (NDC, Anambra) retained his position as Deputy Minority Whip.
As part of the ongoing Constitution Review process, the House rescinded its decision on the presentation of Reports of the Committee on Constitution Review laid on December 3, 2025, pursuant to Order Nine, Rule 1(6) of the Standing Orders. The Reports were subsequently recommitted to the Committee of the Whole for further legislative consideration following extensive stakeholder engagements and consultations.
The House thereafter passed A Bill for an Act to Alter the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) to provide for the Establishment of State Police and for Related Matters. The Bill scaled Third Reading following a recorded vote in which 289 Members voted in support, one Member voted against, and no Member abstained, after the constitutionally required quorum was confirmed.
The passage of the State Police Bill marks a major milestone in Nigeria’s constitutional reform process and reflects the resolve of the House to strengthen the nation’s security architecture through a more decentralised policing framework. The measure is aimed at enhancing public safety, improving responsiveness to local security challenges, and promoting greater accountability in law enforcement.
The proceedings underscored the House’s continued focus on strengthening parliamentary institutions, advancing constitutional reforms, and delivering legislative solutions to issues of national importance.
