The House of Representatives, during plenary sittings held between Tuesday, June 2 and Thursday, June 4, 2026, recorded the defection of 21 Members from the political parties on whose platforms they were elected into the 10th Assembly. The Members cited various reasons, including leadership disputes, internal divisions, and factionalisation within their former parties.

The latest realignments further reflect the evolving partisan landscape within the Green Chamber and bring the number of political parties currently represented in the House to twelve (12).

The parties now represented are: Accord Party (AP), Action People’s Party (APP), African Democratic Congress (ADC), All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), All Progressives Congress (APC), Allied People’s Movement (APM), Labour Party (LP), New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), People’s Democratic Party (PDP), People’s Redemption Party (PRP), and the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

Key Insights:

1. The developments also marked the consolidation of the People’s Redemption Party (PRP) within the 10th Assembly, further broadening political representation in the House.

2. The Young Progressives Party (YPP) remains the only party to have lost its entire representation in the 10th Assembly. Having commenced the Assembly with three Members, all have since defected to other political parties, bringing the total number of parties that have held representation in the House since inauguration to thirteen (13).

3. The latest defections reflect continuing political realignments within the House and have further diversified party representation in the 10th Assembly. With twelve political parties currently represented, the House remains one of the most politically diverse Assemblies in Nigeria’s recent parliamentary history.
