The House of Representatives devoted a key part of its Thursday sitting to debating the general principles of several significant bills aimed at strengthening national institutions and advancing governance reforms across critical sectors.

At the core of the financial-sector agenda were two bills:

(i) A Bill for an Act to Amend the Central Bank of Nigeria Act to allow for Proper Day to Day Operations, Professional Oversight and Checks and Balances and for Related Matters (HB2646), and

(ii) A Bill for an Act to Amend the Banks and Other Financial Institutions Act, 2020 and for Related Matters (HB.2309) – which seeks to remove exploitative and oppressive treatments of millions of Nigerians who work as casual or contract workers in Nigeria’s banking and financial industry.

In the area of human rights, the House advanced:

(i) A Bill to Enact the National Human Rights Commission Bill, 2025 to strengthen the day to day Powers of the Commission, conduct investigations and sustain contributions to the Human Rights Funds for Human Rights activities in the Country, in line with the Paris Principles and for Related Matters (HB.2376)

Other bills debated included:

(i) A Bill for an Act to Alter the Provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 to Create Additional Local Government Areas in Ekiti State and for Related Matters (HB.2505)

(ii) A Bill for an Act to Provide for Establishment of Armed Forces Medical College FCT, Abuja (AFCOM) and for Related Matters (HB.2628), and

(iii) A Bill for an Act to Establish National Institute of Vocational and Technical Education, Uli, Anambra State and for Related Matters (HB. 329)

All the bills were subsequently referred to the relevant House Committees for further legislative action.
