Demonstrating a commitment to inclusive development, Rep. Akin Rotimi Jr., through the AkinOmOAkin Constituency Office, has trained and empowered 100 Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) across Ikole and Oye LGAs. This initiative aligns with efforts to break down barriers faced by PWDs and promote their full integration into society.
In Nigeria, PWDs often face challenges in accessing education, employment, healthcare, and social services. Since the passage of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2018, the Nigerian government has made strides in protecting PWD rights. This program by Rep. Rotimi Jr. enhances these efforts locally, delivering training and resources to support PWDs in leading empowered lives.
Held at Ilupeju Town Hall, the program focused on three goals:
1. Awareness of Rights: Educating participants on their rights under the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2018 to foster self-advocacy.
2. Leadership & Self-Confidence: Challenging stigmas and building skills for leadership in their communities.
3. Practical Skills for Independence: Providing skills that promote self-reliance and family support.
Each of the 100 participants also received a self-help grant of 50,000 Naira to support them.
Rep. Rotimi Jr. remarked, “Our commitment to an inclusive society is rooted in the belief that everyone, regardless of ability, should have the opportunity to thrive. Empowering PWDs is an investment in our collective future.”
Mrs. Olayode Folasade, Legislative Adviser on Social Protection, added, “This program reflects our dedication to inclusivity and empowering every constituent to play a valuable role in society.”
The AkinọmọAkin Constituency Office applauds the participants and encourages them to leverage this support for personal and community growth.
