The afternoon session of Day One at #NASSOpenWeek2026 focused on strengthening legislative oversight through the Oversight, CSOs and Delivery Exchange, chaired by Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara, former Speaker of the 8th House of Representatives.

Special remarks were delivered by representatives of the National Assembly Library Trust Fund, the Senate Committee on NGOs, the House Committee on Civil Societies and Development, the House Committee on Evaluation and Monitoring of the Legislative Agenda, the Office of the Clerk of the House of Representatives, International IDEA, and other stakeholders, all underscoring the importance of collaboration in advancing effective oversight and democratic accountability.

The session also featured a panel discussion with Rep. Bamidele Salam, Chairman, House Committee on Public Accounts; Rep. Chike Okafor, Chairman, House Committee on Nutrition and Food Security; and Rep. Saidu Mohammed Abdullahi, Deputy Chairman, House Committee on Finance, who shared perspectives on strengthening oversight, improving public service delivery, and enhancing accountability across government institutions.

Discussions reaffirmed oversight as the Legislature’s foremost constitutional instrument for ensuring accountability, with participants examining the role of the bureaucracy in effective oversight, procurement integrity, executive-legislative relations, civil society participation, evidence-based reporting, and the delivery of measurable outcomes for citizens.

The session concluded with an interactive engagement that reinforced the value of sustained collaboration among Parliament, government institutions, civil society and the private sector in advancing effective oversight, good governance and democratic accountability.
