Today marks the 117th posthumous birthday of Chief Obafemi Jeremiah Oyeniyi Awolowo, SAN, GCFR. His enduring legacy continues to inspire generations.

His lifestyle stood in clear contrast to the showmanship that often accompanies public office, which some mistake as a measure of leadership. Awo was not given to partying, ostentation, or the flamboyance that some regard as marks of great leaders. Instead, he embodied discipline, intellectual rigor, and a deep commitment to public service.

For him, leadership was not theatre but duty, focused on ideas, institution-building, and policies that uplift the people. His life remains a timeless reminder that substance and character are the true marks of enduring leadership.

I am proud to share an article I wrote six years ago on how his legacy has shaped my own journey in public service.
