The House of Representatives, through a joint interactive session of the Committee on Finance and the Committee on National Planning and Economic Development, on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, reviewed the 2026–2028 Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) and Fiscal Strategy Paper (FSP) as part of its constitutional oversight responsibilities.
The session was chaired by the Chairman of the Committee on Finance, Rt. Hon. (Dr.) James Abiodun Faleke, alongside the Chairman of the Committee on National Planning and Economic Development, Rep. Gboyega Nasir Isiaka.
Key members of the Executive, including the Honourable Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, the Honourable Minister of Budget and National Planning, Senator Atiku Abubakar Bagudu, the Accountant-General of the Federation, Mr. Shamseldeen Babatunde Ogunjimi, as well as representatives of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and other Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), made detailed presentations on the assumptions, projections, and policy priorities underpinning the framework.
Discussions focused on the realism of revenue projections, strategies for improving the performance of revenue-generating agencies, fiscal deficit management, debt sustainability, and the alignment of macroeconomic assumptions with prevailing economic realities.
Members of the Committees emphasised the need for transparent benchmarks and credible implementation mechanisms to ensure that projected economic gains translate into measurable improvements in the welfare of Nigerians.
The Committees resolved to scrutinise the submissions further and incorporate their observations into a comprehensive report. The finalised report will be presented to the House at Plenary for consideration and approval of the MTEF, a statutory prerequisite for the preparation and passage of the 2026 Appropriation Bill.
