The House of Representatives, concluding its legislative week on Thursday, took decisive action on a Matter of Urgent Public Importance regarding the severe escalation of domestic airfares.

Following extensive debate, the House expressed deep concern that the prohibitive cost of air travel has become a major barrier, preventing many citizens from reuniting with family in their ancestral homes during the crucial Yuletide season; a time essential for reinforcing shared laughter, family bonds, and collective cultural well-being.

In response to this growing challenge, the House called for decisive intervention from the Federal Government. A key recommendation was the creation of a transparent assessment mechanism to determine the genuine minimum operational costs for airlines during the festive period, ensuring that ticket prices remain fair and justifiable.

The House further resolved that the Federal Government should reduce airport and auxiliary charges by 50% throughout the Yuletide season. It also urged collaboration with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to prioritise foreign exchange allocation at concessionary rates for airline operators, helping to address major cost pressures that contribute to fare increases.
